Do you know a region where manliness is based on Knitting?
VIEWPOINT: Anyone would ever imagine that a place on earth would exist where manliness could be based on knitting. Such an astonishing place would be a favoured destination for many travelers out there.
The Peruvian island in South America does inhabit such manliness who had been attracting partners by their knitting for the last 500 years. The readers would be amazed by just gazing at the words viz "manliness & knitting". The island of Taquile in the Peruvian island is the one where such manliness does inhabit and has been existed since time immemorial.
Taquileños is a term used for the people of Taquile, they are known for their fine handwoven textiles and clothing, which are regarded as among the highest-quality handicrafts in Peru. Knitting is exclusively performed by males, beginning in early boyhood. Women spin wool and use vegetables and minerals to dye the wool to be used by the community. Women are also the weavers of the Chumpis, the wide belts with woven designs worn by everyone in the community of Taquile.
On the tiny Peruvian island of Taquile, a man's worth isn't measured in his ability to hunt or fish, but in his ability to knit.
Taquilean boys are taught to knit from the age of five or six, with the skill passed down from one male to the next. The first chullo a boy knits is white, though he'll later use sheep wool dyed with locally sourced plants and minerals, and the method is refined until he's able to knit a hat that is tight and neat. It's a painstakingly slow process – even the most experienced knitters on the island need the better part of a month to make a chullo due to the intricate patterns and specific iconography reflecting agricultural, seasonal and familial totems.
"Most of the people learn by looking, watching. The chullos also play a key role in pairing young couples. Men are chosen by their mates based on their ability to successfully knit a chullo with tiny wire-thin needles.
"The girls look for the best chullo. So if a persons wears a good hat, they have got more chances to get a girlfriend earlier and faster,"
Therefore here "A man who knits a really good chullo, [only then] can he be called a man"
