NE's Mirabai Chanu and five others nominated for BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2022.

The
BBC has nominated Northeast India's Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu among five
others for its fourth edition of the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award.
Apart
from Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting), India’s Olympic medallists PV Sindhu
(Badminton), Sakshi Malik (Wrestling), two-time wrestling world championships
medallist Vinesh Phogat and reigning boxing world champion Nikhat Zareen have
also been nominated.
According
to reports, the athletes were short-listed after a panel of jury, which
included sports journalists and writers, voted according to their preference
and based on their achievements.
However,
the winner will be chosen by a public vote that reportedly began on Monday and
will continue till February 20 midnight and the winner will finally be
announced on March 5.
The
poll to vote for the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2022 is already online
on the BBC News, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu websites.
Among
the nominees, Mirabai Chanu and PV Sindhu have previously won the BBC Indian
Sportswoman of the Year award. PV Sindhu won the inaugural edition award in
2020 and Mirabai Chanu won the recent edition.
A
new award category has been announced this year i.e., the Indian
Para-sportswoman of the Year award with the already existing ones, The BBC
Emerging Player of the Year award, and the Lifetime Achievement award.
The
BBC Indian Sportsman of the Year award was started by the British Broadcasting
Corporation (BBC) three years back.
Its
an annual award ceremony which celebrates and honour female athletes from
across the country for their successes in various sports over the past year.
