On 2nd November 2021, The Union Law & Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju convened a meeting with the officers of the Jal Shakti ministry and the Central Water Commission (CWC) on the issue of blackish water and dying fishes in the Kameng river in East Kameng district.
In-Depth
Central Water Commission has informed the Minister that the real cause behind the Mudflow in the river Kameng seems to be from the glacier located around 27.8957 degrees North and 93.6795 degrees East near the Indo-China border.
According to the CWC “, an earthquake of 3.4 magnitude occurred on 13 October, which might have triggered the mudflow heavily on the river leading to unprecedented death of thousands of fishes, they claim its due to high turbidity of the Kameng river water resulting in low dissolved oxygen.”
The expert team of the survey had also informed The SPACE that the gills of fishes couldn't sustain the acute level of oxygen, which resulted to their death.
The Union Law and Justice Minister have directed the officials of the ministry and the CWC to monitor the situation along the river basin in a more close manner and ensure proper coordination between the state government and all agencies concerned.
Meanwhile, the state government had sent off an expert team to survey the kameng River but to their utter dismay, the team had to return back from the halfway owing to the perilous road condition, The team necessitated the use of chopper to the state government.
