Interview with Iken Bam, APCS Ranked 32 .
Hello Eken, first of all, a big congratulations from our side and welcome to The SPACE Media.
SPACE: How do you feel right now?
Eken Bam: I feel extremely happy, there's no word to describe, this is all I wanted.
SPACE: Ok! We are also glad to hear that, so How were the reaction of your Family and loved ones?
Eken Bam: ya! they were so elated, and on the eve of the Result day everyone was so happy about me cracking the most awaited civil service examination.
SPACE: That sounds thrilling and astounding, So Eken! Can you tell us your Journey of preparation?
Eken Bam: I started my preparation from the year 2017 which was my first attempt, I wrote my mains but couldn't clear it, hence I waited for the next advertisement and started preparing abruptly after the new notifications which was out in February 2020. My journey had a perilous journey of five years where I had to adhere to my routine of preparing for the civil service examination, and this time I have been able to crack it finally and yes this was my second attempt.
SPACE: So this year we had a new syllabus, How was your preparation for the new pattern?
Eken Bam: The commission came in with a UPSC pattern so this time we had eight papers compared to the previous APCS pattern where we had two GS papers and two Optionals, unlike this time we had Four GS papers, so my preparation was for both static and current Affairs, The GS paper was more of Analytical in nature, it got us unaware, in fact for everyone, the questions were of a very good standard.
SPACE: Since you commenced your preparation for civil service exams in 2017, so you must have experienced a Paradigm shift in the nature of the question pattern, so what was your reaction on the first of Mains examination?
Eken Bam: For the first day we had Essay and English paper I didn't find anything different, But the GS paper-1 on the second day was shocking, it was so analytical, dynamic and opinion based in nature, it was indeed a drastic change compared to the previous pattern of APCS.
SPACE: So the aspirants have to focus more on current affairs?
Eken Bam: yes the major part was current affairs based, but it was connected to the Static portion, for instance, if there was something on News, Then the question was based on it having a need of the aspirant's opinion,on How you are analyzing the Government's policy, tell the challenges or solution, it was so analytical, unlike the previous one which was mostly static based.
SPACE: So which part of GS did you find the toughest?
Eken Bam: We studied this time only, I studied Ethics based on the UPSC pattern only.
SPACE: So how will you suggest an aspirant regarding the preparation for Ethics?
Eken Bam: They should get the previous year's paper, do the analysis and then get good books for each subject, with current affairs side by side.
SPACE: So how will you suggest an aspirant cover GS paper?
Eken Bam: Do what is possible, that is what I would say, Give a proper time to the higher priority areas.
SPACE: How much time did you take to prepare for the entire GS Papers?
Eken Bam: I gave importance to all the papers because herein our state, we need to achieve 33% in all papers, hence we need to keep balance, we need to give equal weightage to all the papers, unlike in GS UPSC the aspirant focus on four paper, the optional two paper, the Ethics, and Essay, but we can't do this here, since we have to secure both 33% and 45%.
SPACE: How was your routine for GS preparation?
Eken Bam: During the exam time, after the prelim result, I divided time accordingly for the last 60Days for the four GS papers, and optional, I prepared according to time only, So that the last few days could be used for revision.
Before the prelim, just after the notification, I started preparing for prelim but due to covid, I started covering for Mains, I first covered the static portion, and daily I use to read the Hindu paper daily, after that, I used the Vision 365Current Affairs. For one subject I used one book, That's the way Prepared.
SPACE: So Eken that's very good of you, can you tell us how was your Personal Test,(Viva-voce)?
Eken Bam: There were four board members with chairman Jarken Gamlin sir, I was asked about my Hobbies, current affairs-based question, and from my optional papers. All the question was do-able, I think I was lucky to have such board members. Overall my Viva-voce went well.
SPACE: Can you tell us about How did you prepare for Personality Test?
Eken Bam: I took six Mock Interviews after my mains result because I wanted to make sure I am ready for the viva-voce and be confident and get used to it as possible, I went to Photon Ias, Succes Point, and one coaching institute which was based in Pasighat.
The best one was the community-based Mock Interview, I went to the Galo Welfare Society Mock Interview. Eminent civil service officers like Jimmy Chiram, Ojing Dameng etc graced the Mock interview, It was very good.
About my Mock Test, I went to Baji Rao.
One needs determination and persistence within themselves for such preparation.
If an aspirant is unable to do self-study they can go for coaching but one can go for self-study, I didn't go for coaching but I rigorously went for multiple Mock Tests and Mock Interviews.
SPACE: So Eken are you excited for the first Posting?
Eken Bam: Yes obviously! I am, this was all I have been waiting for, be it any place I am just excited to go and serve. Actually, I have always wanted to travel and visit around the state of Arunachal Pradesh so yea!
SPACE: Thank you for your valuable time Iken! We wish you the best of luck for your future endeavor, and thanks for addressing a short interview with The SPACE Media.
