The First Lady of the State Smt Neelam Misra visited the Government Emporium and Craft Centre at Pasighat, East Siang District on 12th March 2021. She interacted with the weavers, artisans and entrepreneurs engaged in traditional loin loom weaving.
The First lady of the State, who herself has been practicing loin loom weaving said that Loin Loom weaving is one of the oldest indigenous artisan skills, or more appropriately a legacy passed down, generation after generation, to the womenfolk of Arunachal Pradesh. She said that loin loom weaving opens doors for every girl and woman to be self empowered.
Sharing her concerns about the diminishing traditional weaving, the First lady of the State said that due to the modern fashion trends and changing social norms, Loin Loom weaving tradition is disappearing in our State. While firmly advocating for revival of traditional loin loom, she said that this trend may push our indigenous arts and craft into oblivion. It would sever the age old family financial support source for the tribal ladies.
The First Lady of the State called upon the local women, particularly the educated young girls and working women to adopt the indigenous loin loom weaving art, craft and skill as a hobby to carry on the social tradition. She exhorted them to take pride in Arunachali cultural heritage and support and actively participate in the traditional weaving culture.
Later, the First Lady visited ‘Elam Industry’, Pasighat-based garment industry started by a retired Indian Air Force Officer Group Captain Mohonto Panging. She said that youths of the State must take inspiration from Group Captain Pangging and become entrepreneurs and provide jobs to others.
The First Lady of the State also visited the Eri Farm at Sille, 7 km from Pasighat. She interacted with the officials and advised them to impart trainings to local entrepreneurs and youths for self employment.
