Covaxin Recommended for Kids but the State Medical institution is yet to get confirmation
In-Depth
The recommendation came from an expert panel wherein, it was stated that Covaxin - Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 vaccine - is ready for use on children between the ages of two and 18. This would now be one of the first approval for the usage of children, however further regulatory approval is needed to launch fully in the market.
"Bharat Biotech has submitted data from clinical trials in the two - 18 age group for Covaxin to CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation). The data has been thoroughly reviewed by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC)... provided positive recommendations," the Hyderabad-based company said.
Dr Randeep Guleria, chief of Delhi's AIIMS, stated that children in the two-18 age group must be vaccinated "because that's the only way to get rid of the pandemic".
Earlier this month Dr NK Arora, the chief of India's vaccine task force, informed that children with severe comorbidities would be prioritized and that other (healthier) kids would be immunized subsequently.
However Final approval will be given by the Drug Controller General of India, which means India is just a step behind in creating a history.
