Hello Goken! First of all a very big congratulations from the entire team of SPACE Media and welcome to the SPACE.
(Goken: Hello and Thank you for giving me this prestigious platform and congratulating me)
SPACE: So! Goken! you have Secured the second Ranked in APCS how do you feel Now?
Goken Koyu: I am very very happy not only for myself but for my family, my entire village, and the community. After hearing I got the second rank the people in my village were elated and so happy, yes that's how I am feeling right now.
SPACE: So what was the reaction of your Parents?
Goken Koyu: First of all when I was awaiting the result, abruptly my father told me that I got the second rank, I was a bit angry with him out of disbelief as I was really perplexed and Nervous.
SPACE: ok! Goken that sounds really thrilling yet elating, So can you tell us about your Journey of Civil Service Preparation?
Goken Koyu: I was pursuing Agriculture for four years, so my journey actually began in the year 2019 after my graduation. I had my brother David Koyu as a mentor and Guide, what to study and what not to study, He himself secured 12th Rank in this APPSCCE-2020.
SPACE: Whoa! that's really surprising ! are you both real brothers?
Goken Koyu: You can say that! since we grew up together, however, he is my first cousin and We both have been able to crack this examination on the same batch, so we are very happy about that as well.
SPACE: So when did you exactly start preparing?
Goken Koyu: I started doing it just one week after my graduation in 2019.
SPACE: What made you think you should start preparing for civil service?
Goken Koyu: Actually I had a dream about it since my school days, however, the real preparation started in 2019.
SPACE: So this was your first Attempt?
Goken Koyu: yes!
SPACE: How about your brother David?
Goken Koyu: Yea it was his second attempt.
SPACE: Can you tell us about Your daily Routine during your preparation?
Goken Koyu: It was not strict but flexible, I use to wake up around 5 or 6 am, my day began after brushing and having a cup of tea and start with Hindu-e-paper, as we don't have Hindu Paper easily available daily in our state, so I subscribed to Hindu-e-paper.
After Hindu, I use to go for NCERT, and after that, I took a break for 1 hour and then continue the same, but in between, I use to look towards Current Affairs. I used to go to bed around 10-11 Pm.
SPACE: In a Day How did you divide your Paper?
Goken Koyu: In starting I use to have such so that I don't get bored but later on when I got used to this monotonous studying period then I use to start by studying one book, and until the book was completed, I was with that book the whole day.
SPACE: Since 2019 you started preparing, so much time did it take you to cover all the NCERTs?
Goken Koyu: It took me 5 to 6 months to cover NCERTs
SPACE: What did you do after covering the NCERTs?
Goken Koyu: After 6 months on Feb 2021 when APPSC rolled out the new notification, then I began doing the Test series, But due to Pandemic I was not certain when will the exam be held hence I kept on continuing my Mock Test. I didn't read many books then, I gave the preliminary and By God's grace I could crack it.
SPACE: How did you study only with Mock-Test?
Goken Koyu: Honestly Internet was my main source which I totally depended upon, I didn't read many books, for every source I used to prefer the Internet.
SPACE: Did you go to any Coaching? what about CSAT?
Goken Koyu: I didn't go for any Coaching, for CSAT I preferred a book named as Disha publication, I solved, again and again, It had 25 years Previous years question, I kept solving, CSAT wasn't tough for me, I used Internet a lot.
SPACE: How did you manage to solve maths since you don't belong to the Maths background?
Goken Koyu: CSAT has a basic class 10 level of Maths, so there was not a problem for me, since I am good at maths, I even got help from youtube .
SPACE: How much time did you give for CSAT?
Goken Koyu: See, CSAT is just a qualifying paper, you need 33% to clear it, therefore I gave it one day in a week. For some difficult questions that I couldn't do, I skipped them.
SPACE: Apart from NCERTs How did you manage to cover all the four General Studies Paper?
Goken Koyu: I preferred the Internet, watched all the previous UPSC Toppers videos on youtube, sometimes I use to make notes of all datas and Key words.
For GS-I, I used Spectrum for history and NCERTs class11-12 for Geography. I think those NCERTs are enough.
For GS-II, I used the Internet, I googled and studied from Wikipedia, Drishti IAS, Insight IAS, etc, and did the same for other GS.
SPACE: Ok! Goken, The GS-IV has Ethics and Integrity how did you manage it?
Goken Koyu: Since I was a student of Holy Cross School, till class 8, we were taught Moral Science and that really helped me a lot, and I am a daily Bible reader, I learned all the philosophy of Ethics from Bible, all about ethics of Righteousness and all.
SPACE: wow! that's something very unique, I never heard any such candidate who said he has learned something from Bible for the exam purpose, you are one of a kind! this is one of the unique answers I have ever heard
Goken Koyu: That's why I tell people don't ask me what I have studied because I don't read a particular book, whatever I read I articulate them on paper.
SPACE: Ok! So how did you manage to cover the Current Affairs section, which seems challenging for all aspirants?
Goken Koyu: Hindu was my very good source, I read it every day, every morning, Even though I missed it, I used to take time to read it, I didn't go for any other magazine but I used Vision IAS Current Affairs.
SPACE: What is the difference between the Current Affairs of Hindu and that of Vision IAS?
Goken Koyu: The Hindu kept me updated about daily happenings and the Vision IAS gave me a collective data of a Month. I used to make short notes from Hindu, and Vision IAS I downloaded at the end of the month.
SPACE: How much of current Affairs did you study for Prelim?
Goken Koyu: I don't remember that but I used Vision IAS 360
SPACE: Did you make Notes for GS mains?
Goken Koyu: Mains I didn't make any Notes, I think this was also the reason I didn't qualify for the UPSC Mains
SPACE: Wow! Goken you must be brilliant.
Goken Koyu: Nothing like that, It's just God's grace.
SPACE: What Message do you want to give to the aspirants who desire to pursue the civil service examination?
Goken Koyu: Here I would like to tell all the aspiring candidates, whatever you have read just now, don't think that it is just a constant thing, you get up and start doing the same thing for one-two years, because in-between years there are lots of breaks, and even one week of break is a break, You will get diverted, your body would be exhausted but Don't get discouraged, just continue doing the thing. Even I used to lie down, leave all my study due to exhaustion but I tried hard and kept the momentum, this trying and trying only will get you to where you want to be, this is what I want to say to the Aspirants out there.
SPACE: So, are you excited about your first posting?
Goken Koyu: Yes indeed! I am very excited.
SPACE: Since you started preparing just after graduation, Do you have any plans to pursue your Master?
Goken Koyu: Now I don't think so! but we will see about it in the Future.
SPACE: Thank you for your valuable time and giving a short interview to our SPACE MEDIA
Goken Koyu: It was really a pleasure talking to you, Civil service is one of a job, and you are also doing a good job, we need people like you. I am totally satisfied and thankful to SPACE Media to interview me, which I never thought of. So! Thank you once again.
